It would be good if you could link to ticket #632 ( (http://varnish-cache.org/ticket/632) after "4. If you have issues starting Varnish, start Varnish in the foreground via -F argument." It's quite a serious bug, it should *always* be run in foreground.

For me, it was even a little easier:
I just deleted ".snap" in the folder "org.eclipse.core.resources". That didn't damage (or reset) my workspace but Eclipse came up again :)

I don't know if that works for everyone, I just had a single project in the workspace.

Awesome! Coming from the Ubuntu world, I had to do some very basic setup to get a good build environment going on OpenSolaris. Documented that here:

Event though my blog tells everyone how much I hate the fact that Wicket is codeheavy, I am actually deeply in love with the fact that I can make a full blown functional website and just hand out my wicket template files to a designer that can make my website shine. In this respect nothing surpasses Wicket. Especially since I am an educated Java developer, I tend to leave the CSS to the bare minimum ;)

I completely forgot about this post. I actually figured out the root cause of our performance problem. The issue was with a high TLER value defined on caviar black hard disks. See the link below for more information on TLER.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-Limited_Error_Recovery

Point of story is, don't go cheap when setting up a RAID system. Buy only RAID edition drives, they are tuned for RAID setups. Live and learn I guess.

Actually for SATA disks the ZFS folks required that
only a single I/O be sent down to the driver at a time
as they say a fall off in concurrent sequential I/O
performance. The problem is likely is in an assumption
in ZFS about the order of completion of the I/Os by
the disk be at least roughly in the order that ZFS submitted
them. This is not true with either SATA NCQ or SCSI/SAS
simple tagged queueing. Nikolay was correct in pointing
out that that something else is going on. Look at the size
of the active queue ("actv"). It is 0, not 32.
